Different Fighting Styles in MMA Explained : Just hearing the word MMA, strong punches, grappling gloves, and a closed cage comes into mind. MMA is short for Mixed Martial Arts.; thus, it has different fighting styles. For instance, if you are using BJJ techniques mostly then your style would be BJJ based and so on.

To be the greatest martial artist you have to be a master of different styles, more you are great at different styles better of an MMA artist you will be. These styles are commonly two groups known as striking and grappling. Further, the boxing and kickboxing styles placed under striking category and wrestling and jiu-jitsu under grappling. The following are the different MMA styles explained.

  • Striking Martial Arts

This is a dangerous style in MMA and is used to deliver maximum damage to the opponent. When delivered right it can knock out the opponent in one blow.

  • Boxing

Boxing is one of the most renowned forms of martial arts, the most basic, and pioneers of martial arts all around the globe. Even though it is basic but adds effective style to MMA. Your two fists are all used to deliver the damage but of course, there are some rules like you cannot hit the back of the head and torso.

  • Kickboxing

If you also use elbows, knees, and shins to hit and damage it brings you in the territory of kickboxing. It is the name, did you get it, kick-boxing? As there is more you can use to damage so this makes it even more dangerous. Knees, elbows, and shin bones are sharper and heavier than your knuckles so, they deliver more damage.  On the other hand, you also have the option to defend a broader strike better because other body parts are involved. The attacks can now be delivered from a distance. Haven’t you noticed, well, this is also called the sister martial art form of Muay Thai but it does not use the ground-based techniques as Muay Thai?

  • Grappling Martial Arts

Now comes the second category, this one is fiercer and quicker so here you have to keep yourself safe. Which can be done by wearing MMA gear and guards. The grappling is used to get an upper hand on your challengers by wrestling them taking them to ground than some turn to do forcing submission. Bending limbs, putting them in choking locks are options to make them tap out, meaning you win. Remember our goal is not to break the bones actually all we have to do is make them tap out.

  • Wrestling

Wrestling is points based winning system where you can gain points by taking an opponent down, getting control over, successful defend against maneuver, submitting opponent, or pin them down. By now you would have already thought that it is basically raw strength, yes, its True. However, one thing in common, i.e. getting control of your opponent. It teaches you how to get in the position where you can easily defend yourself and control the opponent.

  • Jiu-Jitsu

Of course, we all know that the Ultimate Fighting Championship is the biggest organization when it comes to mixed martial arts. It hosted the first tournament and surprisingly the winner was a jiu-jitsu martial art specialist. Ever heard of the name Royce Gracie? Basically, he is the father or Jiujitsu martial art and he developed his own form which one of the most popular and most used techniques in Jiu-jitsu.

Creating the modern version which is known as BJJ aka Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and focus on grappling and submission techniques. Different chokes and limb-bending grips with brute force that makes opponents surrender is what it is.

  • Judo

The goal with Judo was to create something for smaller and relatively weaker people. It rose through the ranks of martial arts beginning in the late 1800s and later on 1964 became officially a member of Olympic sports. There are similarities to BJJ however the emphasis is on taking an opponent down using throwing techniques.
