Will Eating Chocolate Make You Smarter

Here is another study reported in a well respected peer reviewed Journal, Hypertension, that I find difficult to accept. The study reported that older people with mild thinking impairment benefited from drinking a cocoa beverage rich in flavanol.

The subjects who participated did better on a series of cognition tests that included memory and verbal fluency. As an added benefit their blood sugar, memory and verbal fluency improved. This is a big bang from ingesting some great tasting chocolate.

My take on this report is that if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is not true. In a study such as this the influence of the placebo effect can be huge You may have seen commercials on television for an amazing product derived from jelly fish that improves memory. The results were proven in clinical studies. What they do not tell you is that the studies were not double blind controlled. In other words the subjects had expectations about the medicine.

Once again look out for the placebo effect.
