70 suburbs still without safe tap water

By | August 30, 2020

Warnings to boil tap water have been lifted in 26 Melbourne suburbs after wild storms contaminated the supply system.

Bottled water has been flying off supermarket shelves in the city’s north and south east after the scare peaked to impact on 99 suburbs and about 250,000 houses on Saturday.

In a statement released at 9.30pm on Saturday, Melbourne Water listed 26 areas in the Yarra Valley Water network that were now deemed safe.

Those suburbs included: Attwood, Blackburn South, Box Hill North, Broadmeadows, Burwood, Campbellfield, Coolaroo, Craigieburn, Dallas, Doreen, Greenvale, Kalorama, Meadow Heights, Melbourne Airport, Mernda, Monbulk, Mont Albert North, Mount Dandenong, Olinda, Research, Roxburgh Park, Somerton, South Morang, Westmeadows, Wollert and Yarrambat.

There was no change to advice for residents whose homes and businesses are supplied by South East Water last night.

Contaminated water warnings remain in place for 74 Melbourne suburbs on Sunday morning.

Residents in those areas are advised to prepare water with a “rolling boil” before drinking, washing and preparing food and baby formula, brushing teeth and making ice until further notice.

It came after power outages caused by a devastating overnight storm on Thursday allowed potentially unsafe water from Silvan Dam to enter the region’s water system.

“Our teams are working around the clock to address this issue,” Melbourne Water said in Friday.

“Until we can guarantee that the water is safe to drink again, we ask customers to boil their water.”

Many residents in Melbourne’s east went into their third night without power on Saturday, with the suburbs of Kilsyth, Ferntree Gully and The Basin the worst affected.
