If you are subject to allergies, and about 8% of Americans are, you know it is spring because your eyes are red, your nose is leaking and you are sneezing. This is happening to you because you are allergic and are having an allergic reaction.

Pollen does not affect everyone, but if you are allergic to a pollen it becomes an irritant that stimulates your immune system to release an antibody that binds to the pollen and causes your body to react. If you have one parent who is allergic you will be twice as likely to be allergic. If both of your parents are allergic you will four times as likely to be allergic.

You can prepare for the allergy season by going on line to the website of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. It monitors the concentration of  irritants in the air. If the count of a pollen that you are allergic to is increasing, it would be prudent to take your medication and limit outdoor activity.
