The Full ‘Game of Thrones’ Finale Script Was Released and Fans Are Pissed About This “Dumb” Detail

By | August 1, 2019
  • The Game of Thrones finale script was released by the Emmys.
  • It revealed the “dumb” reason Drogon burned the Iron Throne.

There are some major Game of Thrones spoilers ahead, so if you still haven’t watched it yet, good luck reading anything on the internet!

As if the whole last half of season eight of Game of Thrones and that unforgivable Ed Sheeran scene of 2K17 weren’t torture enough, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are here to make fans even more upset about the end of Thrones.

So now that the show is nominated for 32 Emmys, the awards site released the script for the final episode because it was nominated for the Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series award. If you haven’t blocked that episode out of your memory, allow me to upset you all over again really quick.

After the living defeated the Night King, they turned their attention to Cersei Lannister and King’s Landing. Daenerys Targaryen and Drogon ended up killing literally everyone and their mother, and Jon Snow killed Dany because he’s fancies himself a man of justice. After Jon killed Dany, Drogon was like, “Nothing but respect for my queen who deserved a better character arc!” and burned everything to the ground. In the process, he legit lit up the Iron Throne, making it cease to exist.

As far as the whole episode went, that part was pretty poetic and most people thought it was symbolic. At the time, a lot of fans thought Drogon knew the throne was a symbol of power and thought that he took his emotions out on the throne because it was fashioned out a bunch of swords. Remember: Jon stabbed Dany, so there seemed to be an obvious connection there.

But jokes on us because apparently there are actually no layers to that scene! According to the script, the throne was just a “dumb bystander” in Drogon’s path of destruction.

    Here’s the maddening excerpt:

“The dragon rises up on his hind legs, towering over Jon. In a beautiful, terrifying tableaux, he roars to the sky, the embodiment of rage. He looks down at Jon. We see the fire build up in his throat. Jon sees it as well. He prepares to die. But the blast is not for him. Drogon wants to burn the world but he will not kill Jon. He breathes fire on the back wall, blasting down what remains of the great red blocks of stone. We look over Jon’s shoulder as the fire sweeps toward the throne—not the target of Drogon’s wrath, just a dumb bystander caught up in the conflagration. We look through the blades of the throne as the flames engulf it, and blast the wall behind it. We see the throne in the flames, turning red, then white, then beginning to lose its form.”

Yeah, people on Twitter are not impressed by David and D.B.’s writing.

Damn, in hard times like these, you wish David and D.B. were revisionist writers like J.K. Rowling! Make it make sense!
