Tips to deal with kids' (or your) cedar allergy – KXAN.com

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Cedar pollen counts shot up late last week, and with another spike on the way as soon as Thursday, schools are warning parents to make sure they’re paying attention to their children’s symptoms. Some of these tips can apply to adults, too.

Before starting any medication, it’s best to check with your doctor or pharmacist about the most appropriate treatment for you.

How to reduce the effects of cedar

  1. Try an over-the-counter or prescription allergy medicine. Many work best if taken daily with enough time for it to work, instead of only relying on it when symptoms occur.
  2. Wash hands and the face, especially after being outside
  3. Nasal rinses and eye washes may help rinse away allergens and reduce symptoms
  4. Shower and wash hair every night to get rid of pollen
  5. Avoid going outdoors unless necessary if someone has severe symptoms. Indoor recess may be an option at some schools
