Top 7 Going Green Facts and Benefits

By | September 8, 2018

Most of us know that going green is good for the earth, but how can it be of benefit to you? There are many simple steps you can take to help the environment, and at the same time enjoy the benefits that are included.

1. Go Paperless

Just about any type of bill can be paid online; you can even go a step further and go paperless. You’ll still be able to view and pay your bill online, but will no longer receive paper statements. Not only will you save time and gas, you’ll also avoid the hassle of long lines and crowded places. If each household went paperless, this would save about 16 million trees.

2. Maintain Proper Insulation in Your Home

The majority of people are unaware that their home is not properly insulated. This leads to higher electricity consumption and higher bills. By assuring that your home’s ductwork, pipes, and floors are correctly insulated, you can cut your energy bill by 25%!

3. Recycle Kitchen Scraps

Instead of trashing kitchen scraps and yard wastes, it is better to compost them. It’s beneficial for the environment and could also be used as fertilizer for your garden. There are plenty of step by step guides and videos online that can help you get started with composting.

4. Wash Your Laundry with Cold Water

Although some people do their laundry using hot water only, not all clothing items need to be washed with warm water. If everyone in the U.S. only used cold water when washing their clothes, it would save approximately $ 3 billion dollars nationally.

5. Recycle Newspaper

You may think that newspapers are of no use after you’ve read them, but that is not true. If everyone was to recycle their newspaper, about 75 million trees could be saved! Another alternative is to donate the newspaper to veterinary clinics or animal shelters. Although the newspapers will not be reusable after going through animal facilities, they will be of use once more before being trashed. You will be helping your community as well as the environment.

6. Save on Water Bill

We all use too much water. Go green in the home by cutting back as much as you can. We could all, collectively, save one billion gallons of water a year by changing our old flush toilet cisterns. The old ones use three and a half gallons per flush and the new high-efficiency ones use just over one and a quarter gallon. It makes a big difference! If you did only this to go green in the home you would save 20,000 gallons of water every year, and pay a lot less in water bills.

7. Electric Energy

The standard light bulbs that most homes have are very inefficient. Compact fluorescent light bulbs burn around 5% of the old bulbs and they last 10 times longer. They may cost slightly more to buy initially, but this is an obvious way to go green in the home and save a bundle in the long run. But you can do even better, The new LED lights are almost twice as efficient as even the compact fluorescent light bulbs, and they will last even longer too.
