I usually don’t write reviews, but this book has literally changed the lives of so many people in my family, I thought I’d at least have to thank Elaine for this book publicly. My mother has had Crohn’s disease since she was a little girl, but Doctors didn’t know what was wrong with her until later. She’d literally drink gallons of anti-acids and over time, began to think that everyone just went around having a stomach ache and other “bathroom” problems After having children, she had severe flare-ups that left her skeletal and hospitalized, fighting for her life. She went to a Naturapathic Doctor and he got her on a raw diet free of processed flours or sugars, no meat, dairy, eggs or grains whatsoever. This healed her for the time being.

Guidelines for dietary recommendations and nutritional therapy for patients with inflammatory bowel disease IBD are lacking, and patients are moving toward popular defined diets for relief of symptoms and inflammation. However, many proposed diets involve elimination of specific foods or food groups and may exacerbate or inadequately replete micronutrient deficiencies that are prevalent in patients with IBD at baseline. Further, limited data are available to guide clinicians on the use of dietary protocols for IBD. This article reviews dietary risk factors for IBD and common beliefs about diet among patients with IBD, and how these aspects may inform general dietary recommendations for this patient population. Additionally, this article reviews dietary interventions used in the management of active IBD, with a focus on whole food diet—based therapies rather than enteral or parenteral nutrition, as well as their nutritional adequacy. This article also highlights various dietary concepts and approaches among patients with IBD, along with the potential for nutritional inadequacy of popular defined diets for IBD. Partnerships with registered dietitians are needed to guide patients with IBD in nutrition and dietary intervention. Larger randomized studies are needed to support evidence-based dietary recommendations for IBD. Goals of therapy include corticosteroid-free clinical and endoscopic remission, which can help reduce the risk of flares, hospitalization, and surgery.

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet SCD is a group of foods which are grain-free, sugar-free, starch-free, and unprocessed. While removing many foods that are toxic and digestively harmful, the diet remains natural, extremely nourishing and representative of what our ancestors ate. But if you are one of the lucky few who needs a bit of digestive support this diet was created especially for you. The principles of SCD were laid down by Dr. Elaine Gottschall then dedicated her life to researching the diet — gut connection. Breaking the Vicious Cycle is the reason we are here today and. We are very grateful for all the hard work that Elaine put into it and we think everyone should own a copy or two. The main principle of the diet is that carbohydrates are classified by their chemical structure; they are monosaccharide, disaccharide, or polysaccharide.
